Ryan Gosling revs up for Ghost Rider, making Marvel’s hottest casting yet

From Drive to motorcycles and stunt films, Gosling’s love for life in the fast lane makes his MCU debut a natural fit

SAN DIEGO: Talk about a match made in heaven, or perhaps hell. After years of fan casting, Ryan Gosling is officially riding into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider, and if there is one actor whose filmography has been quietly preparing him for the flaming motorcycle, it is Gosling himself.

The announcement came during San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios unveiled a slate of major projects through 2028. Gosling took the stage alongside Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and confirmed that he would play Ghost Rider in a standalone film directed by Shawn Levy, with whom he reunites after Deadpool & Wolverine. The film is slated for release in 2028.

The casting feels less like a surprise and more like destiny.

Long before donning a supernatural leather jacket, Gosling built a reputation as Hollywood’s coolest man behind the wheel. His breakthrough action role in Drive saw him play a reserved Hollywood stunt driver who moonlighted as a getaway driver. The neon-soaked thriller became an instant cult classic, with Gosling’s satin scorpion jacket becoming one of modern cinema’s most recognisable costumes.

His connection to the film extended beyond acting. During production, Gosling bought and personally restored the battered 1973 Chevrolet Malibu driven by his character, later keeping the car after filming wrapped.

He returned to the world of stunt performers in The Fall Guy, portraying veteran stuntman Colt Seavers in an action-comedy packed with high-speed chases, spectacular jumps and elaborate vehicle stunts, once again proving his comfort with action-heavy roles.

Even in science fiction, vehicles have played a defining role in Gosling’s career. In Blade Runner 2049, he spent much of the film piloting futuristic flying Spinner vehicles across a bleak dystopian landscape, further cementing his on-screen association with life in the fast lane.

If cars are one half of Gosling’s automotive identity, motorcycles complete the picture.

In The Place Beyond the Pines, he portrayed Luke Glanton, a travelling carnival motorcycle stunt rider whose life spirals into crime after becoming a father. Gosling, an avid motorcyclist in real life, reportedly performed around 70 per cent of his own motorcycle stunts for the film and even kept his movie bike after production ended.

That combination of driving precision, stunt experience and a genuine passion for motorcycles has long fuelled speculation that Gosling would be an ideal fit for Ghost Rider, Marvel’s supernatural antihero known for riding a blazing motorcycle while dispensing vengeance.

Fans have campaigned for the casting for years, and Gosling himself has previously expressed interest in taking on the role. At Comic-Con, he acknowledged that history, telling the audience, “As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a long time.”

Ghost Rider was one of several headline announcements from Marvel’s Hall H presentation.

The studio also confirmed Black Panther 3, with David Jonsson set to play the adult Prince T’Challa, alongside returning stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke. Denzel Washington has also joined the cast in a role written specifically for him.

Meanwhile, first-look footage from Avengers: Doomsday teased the origins of Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom and his connection to Reed Richards, while directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo were joined on stage by an ensemble including Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie and Ryan Reynolds.

For Marvel fans, Gosling’s casting closes one of the internet’s longest-running wish lists. For everyone else, it is simply another reminder that sometimes the best casting decisions have been hiding in plain sight all along.
