MUMBAI: When couture crosses borders, it doesn’t divide, it tells a story. Isha Ambani turned heads at Vogue’s 2026 Met Gala pre-party, arriving in a striking Manish Malhotra x Swadesh ensemble that stitched together India’s diverse craft traditions into a single, seamless narrative. The outfit featured 26 distinct borders, each representing a different region of the country, an ode to this year’s theme, Costume Art.
Crafted over 450 hours by Swadesh artisans, the strapless bandage-style dress reimagined Western silhouettes through an Indian lens. Each border carried its own identity from zari work of Uttar Pradesh and Parsi gara embroidery to Maheshwari weaves, kantha, Kanjeevaram silk, Paithani and Banarasi brocade bringing together techniques from across north, south, east and west India.
The result was less a garment and more a living tapestry, where every edge held history. What looked like structure on the surface unfolded into storytelling up close, reflecting the depth and continuity of India’s artisan heritage.
Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, Ambani paired the look with minimal yet defined makeup smokey eyes and a soft coral blush letting the craftsmanship take centre stage. The accessories, however, added their own drama. She wore floral diamond earrings and a haathphool, alongside a standout ‘Majestic Leopard Couture’ hair ornament by Outhouse Jewellery.
Handcrafted over 300 hours, the two-foot-long sculptural piece featured twin leopard motifs framing a luminous prehnite drop designed as both statement and symbolism, evoking strength and balance.
Together, the ensemble and accessories underscored a larger message: that craftsmanship, shaped slowly over time and across regions, can find fresh expression on global stages without losing its roots.
