Microsoft begins removing Copilot branding from Windows 11 apps

MUMBAI: Microsoft is quietly putting Copilot in the background literally. The company has started removing the prominent Copilot branding and dedicated buttons from several native Windows 11 applications, signalling a strategic shift in how it presents artificial intelligence across its ecosystem. According to reports, the changes are currently visible in preview builds shared with Windows Insiders and are expected to roll out more widely in future updates. The Copilot button has already disappeared from apps such as Notepad and Snipping Tool. In the updated Notepad, it has been replaced with a simpler “writing tools” menu, while in Snipping Tool the Copilot option no longer appears after capturing an area. Similar adjustments are also being made in Photos and Widgets.

Microsoft says the updates are part of a broader effort to reduce excessive entry points to Copilot while keeping the underlying AI capabilities intact. The company is moving away from highlighting Copilot as a standalone feature and instead embedding its intelligence more naturally into everyday tools.

This repositioning aims to create a cleaner, less cluttered user experience in Windows 11. Over time, the proliferation of Copilot buttons and prompts across the system had begun to feel overwhelming for some users. By consolidating AI functions into context-aware menus, Microsoft hopes to make the technology feel more seamless and less intrusive.

For most users, the day-to-day functionality remains largely unchanged. Tasks such as rewriting text in Notepad or using AI assistance in other apps continue to be available, just accessed through different, more integrated paths.

The development reflects a maturing approach to AI integration at Microsoft focusing less on flashy branding and more on practical, everyday usefulness. As Windows 11 evolves, the AI features are becoming less of a headline and more of a helpful background player.

In short, Copilot isn’t going away, it’s simply learning to blend in.
