CALIFORNIA: Instagram is dialling up the drama in direct messages. The platform has rolled out AI voice effects in India, letting users tweak voice notes with character-style filters—without mangling tone, rhythm or emotional nuance.
The feature, embedded inside the messaging composer, allows users to record a voice note, preview effects and apply a preferred style before hitting send. Around eight options are live at launch, including “chipmunk”, “demon”, “alien”, “robot”, “underwater”, “stadium”, “wobble” and “fishbowl”. A tap on “original” restores the unfiltered version.
Crucially, the tech avoids the distortion typical of legacy voice filters. Instead, it preserves the speaker’s natural delivery while layering a stylised audio skin—pushing voice notes from functional to performative.
There is a social hook, too. Recipients can see which effect has been used and tap to mirror it in their reply, creating a loop of stylised exchanges that turns routine chats into playful back-and-forths. The tool is live across DM threads in India and requires no additional apps.
The rollout underscores Instagram’s broader AI push, with reports suggesting the company is also testing a face-swap feature dubbed “Create My Likeness.”
Voice notes have long been on the rise. With AI voice effects, Instagram is not just riding that wave, it is remixing it, turning everyday chatter into something closer to performance art.
