HEADLINE: STAGE launches India’s first AI vertical series, solo-created by a village boy from Haryana
SUB-HEADLINE: Manik Prajapati went from a school with no computers to solo-creating “Jai Hanuman” across six dialects using STAGE’s in-house AI studio
GURUGRAM/NEW DELHI: Some stories are genuinely difficult to believe, and this is one of them. Manik Prajapati, known offscreen as Mohit Kumar, has single-handedly created Jai Hanuman, India’s first AI vertical series, releasing weekly and simultaneously in six dialects, Haryanvi, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Gujarati, Marathi and Bengali. That alone would be a headline. The backstory behind it makes it something considerably more.
Prajapati comes from a village in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district and studied at a government school without a single computer. He spent three years preparing for a government job, only to watch that plan collapse when the exam paper leaked. It was during the bleakest stretch of pandemic unemployment that a laptop landed in his hands in 2020, setting off four years of self-taught freelance video editing, with no degree and no mentor to guide him.
His break came at STAGE, India’s first regional dialect-based OTT platform, where he joined as a social media editor. When chief executive Vinay Singhal launched the company’s institutional push into AI, Prajapati found himself on a three-member volunteer team tasked with hunting down new AI tools and rolling them out across the organisation. That assignment proved to be the turning point, carrying him from promo editor to senior promo editor and eventually onto STAGE’s first AI film project.
What makes this more than an individual success story is the system STAGE has built around it. Under production head Sushant Kaushik, a mixed team of engineers and filmmakers was set two goals simultaneously, build the company’s first AI film and build an indigenous AI filmmaking pipeline alongside it. That combined effort produced the first version of the software with 12vi Aala Pyaar, after which individual filmmakers were handed full end-to-end ownership of their own projects, from writing through to marketing. Prajapati got Jai Hanuman, and ran with it entirely on his own, visuals, dubbing and all six dialects included.
The wider slate tells its own story about scale. STAGE’s AI-native pipeline is already powering Veer Teja Ji, Dada Chhoturam, Sonagachi Versus State, The Last Promise, Kailasham and Daud, all produced at a fraction of traditional studio costs. As the global debate over AI-made cinema continues to split opinion between enthusiasts and sceptics, STAGE appears to be sidestepping the argument entirely by simply demonstrating what is possible, regional dialect content made at genuine speed and scale, by a single filmmaker armed with the right tools.
Praveen Singhal, chief content officer at STAGE, called Prajapati’s journey proof of what the country’s talent can achieve given the right opportunity, adding that the point of embracing AI was to let every storyteller, regardless of origin, create at scale. Given where Prajapati started, a government school with no computers, that claim carries rather more weight than the usual corporate line.
