CALIFORNIA: Facebook is getting a significant AI upgrade. Meta has begun rolling out a clutch of new features that use artificial intelligence to help users find answers, create content and share it, leaning hard on the technology that has become the company’s biggest bet.
The centrepiece is AI Mode, a new search experience powered by Meta AI that sits directly inside Facebook. Unlike conventional search that returns a list of links, AI Mode draws on what people are saying publicly across Meta’s apps, including Groups and Reels, to deliver answers grounded in real opinions, recommendations and experiences. It is, in effect, a way to mine the collective knowledge of Facebook’s vast user base rather than pointing people elsewhere.
Meta AI, which powers the feature, runs on the company’s Muse Spark model and is designed to surface inside the experiences users already inhabit, whether they are scrolling a feed or hunting for something specific.
On the creative side, Facebook is updating its camera roll sharing suggestions with new collage cutout templates, such as friend hangouts from the past month, along with transition effects that produce smooth, stylised video montages ready to share with a single tap. The feature remains opt-in only and can be switched off at any time.
New photo presets take things further, letting users change their clothing, hair and accessories using AI. Sports fans can virtually pull on a team jersey to show their allegiance. The tools are accessible through the AI Edit icon in Stories by selecting Wear It, or directly from a profile picture by tapping Restyle profile picture with AI and choosing Wardrobe.
For a platform that has spent years watching younger users drift towards TikTok and Instagram, the message is clear: Facebook is no longer just a place to scroll. It wants to be the place where things get done.
