Studio Blo marks Independence Day with AI-driven short film on freedom

The film blends human emotion and artificial intelligence to explore modern patriotism

MUMBAI: Freedom gets a digital makeover this Independence Day as Studio Blo unveils an AI-driven short film exploring freedom, empathy and patriotism through a contemporary cinematic lens.

Produced by Studio Blo, the film is conceptualised and directed by Sendil Kumar and features Akif Mohammad and Aarini Sharma. Anushka Dhanawat serves as designer, while Pankaj Kathpal is the editor.

The film uses artificial intelligence alongside traditional storytelling to offer a new interpretation of Independence Day. Rather than leaning on overt displays of nationalism, it explores the idea of freedom through human emotion, unity and standing by others.

For Studio Blo, the project also serves as a showcase of how AI can be integrated into filmmaking beyond simply generating visual effects. The studio uses AI across stages including ideation, world-building, character creation, visual development and large-scale content production.

Dipankar Mukherjee, co-founder and CEO, Studio Blo, said the film was an attempt to explore freedom through a new visual language where human emotion and AI-led creativity work together.

“AI is not here to replace the storyteller, but to give storytellers new ways to imagine, experiment and bring their ideas to life,” Mukherjee said.

Sendil Kumar, ECD, Studio Blo, said the film focuses on empathy and unity rather than jingoism.

“AI gave us the tools to bring this message to life in a way that would not have been practically possible otherwise. But AI is only the tool, the message remains deeply human,” Kumar said.

The project comes as AI continues to reshape India’s entertainment and content industries, with studios experimenting with synthetic characters, virtual production and AI-assisted visual storytelling.

Studio Blo’s previous work includes Warlord, an AI-driven sci-fi series created with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, AI-powered celebrity cloning involving Hardik Pandya, and cinematic campaigns including a Mumbai Indians Women’s Premier League film.

The studio has also worked with filmmakers including Rajkumar Hirani, Atlee and Rohit Shetty as it pushes AI further into mainstream entertainment.

With its latest film, Studio Blo is making a case for AI not as the star of the show, but as another tool in the storyteller’s kit, leaving the emotion and message firmly in human hands.
