OpenAI to end Cursor model access after SpaceX acquisition, cites contract concerns

The AI company will shut off direct access on November 12 after nearly four years

MUMBAI: OpenAI is ending its commercial partnership with coding platform Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX, with direct access to OpenAI models set to end on November 12, 2026.

OpenAI has formally notified SpaceX that it intends to wind down the contract supplying its models to Cursor. The company is relying on a provision in its agreement that allows cancellation following a change in corporate control.

The November 12 shutdown date gives developers the maximum notice permitted under the contract, allowing Cursor users to continue accessing OpenAI models through the platform during the transition period.

OpenAI said the decision was driven by concerns over contractual compliance involving companies controlled by Elon Musk. The company pointed to previous disputes involving Twitter, now part of SpaceX, and xAI, which it said had also been consolidated under SpaceX.

According to OpenAI, large-scale partnerships typically require customised contracts covering compliance with terms of service and safety requirements. The company said its previous experience with Musk-controlled businesses made it difficult to establish confidence that SpaceX would use its technology within those terms.

OpenAI also cited the upcoming release of its next model, Astra, as a reason for taking a more cautious approach to how its future AI systems are deployed.

The company said its agreement with Cursor provided only a limited period in which it could terminate the contract following a change in control. Rather than cutting off access immediately, OpenAI has chosen the latest possible termination date while withholding access to future models.

The decision marks a significant change for a partnership that has lasted nearly four years. Cursor has become a widely used developer tool, with OpenAI models forming part of its AI-powered coding capabilities.

OpenAI said it respects Cursor’s team and product and intends to support developers affected by the change during the transition.

The move also highlights the increasingly complex contractual and governance issues surrounding access to advanced AI models, particularly when technology companies undergo major ownership changes. For Cursor developers, the November deadline now sets a clear end date for direct access to OpenAI models through the platform.
