New study reveals AI tools could replace 7 roles at 1/10th the cost

Indian businesses could run entire team workloads for just Rs 4.5 lakh a year instead of Rs 45–50 lakh.

MUMBAI: What if one mid-level software developer’s salary could power an entire seven-person team? A new study by XSquareSEO suggests we’re already close to that reality. The 2026 AI Cost vs Workforce Study assigns realistic human salary equivalents to seven popular AI tools and calculates that the combined workload they can handle would cost a traditional Indian company Rs 45–50 lakh annually in salaries. In contrast, subscribing to all seven tools costs just Rs 4.5 lakh per year delivering a theoretical saving of over 90 per cent.

In simple terms: the Rs 10 lakh salary of one mid-level developer is enough to run this full AI stack for nearly two years.

The study maps the following tools to their closest Indian job roles:

Intercom AI → Customer Support (Rs 3.5 LPA → Rs 92K) — 96 per cent cheaper
ElevenLabs → Voice Artist (Rs 4 LPA → Rs 12K) — 99 per cent cheaper
ChatGPT → Content Writer (Rs 4.5 LPA → Rs 25K) — 99 per cent cheaper
Perplexity → Research Analyst (Rs 5 LPA → Rs 18K) — 99 per cent cheaper
Midjourney → Graphic Designer (Rs 6 LPA → Rs 65K) — 98 per cent cheaper
Cursor → Software Developer (Rs 10 LPA → Rs 65K) — 99 per cent cheaper
Clay → Sales Development (Rs 12 LPA plus → Rs 1.8L) — 98 per cent cheaper
Total human cost: Rs 45–50 lakh per year
Total AI cost: Rs 4.5 lakh per year
Overall saving: Over 90 per cent

The study highlights that while AI cannot yet fully replace human judgement, creativity, or contextual decision-making, it is already absorbing a massive portion of routine and repetitive tasks. AI tools operate 24/7 (8,760 hours a year) compared to a human’s roughly 1,850–2,000 working hours, giving them a 4–5x availability advantage.

For Indian startups and SMEs facing hiring freezes and rising salaries, this represents a structural shift. A small team could theoretically manage content, design, development, research, support, and sales workflows at a fraction of traditional costs, allowing founders to scale faster with leaner teams.

The study serves as a clear “what if” scenario rather than a claim of full replacement. It shows how dramatically the economics of building teams have changed and urges businesses to rethink how they blend human talent with AI-powered tools.

In the race to stay competitive, Indian companies that understand this cost gap early may find themselves not just surviving but sprinting ahead with significantly lighter payrolls. The future of work isn’t just coming; according to this study, it’s already far more affordable than most realise.
