MUMBAI: From inboxes to insights, Microsoft’s latest AI doesn’t just lend a hand, it rolls up its sleeves. Microsoft has globally launched Copilot Cowork, a new AI-powered workplace tool designed to move beyond simple assistance and take ownership of complex, multi-step business tasks across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
The rollout marks Microsoft’s latest push into agentic AI systems capable of independently planning and executing workflows rather than merely responding to prompts. Following a limited preview phase that reportedly saw participation from more than half of Fortune 500 companies, Copilot Cowork is now available to Microsoft 365 Copilot users worldwide.
Unlike conventional AI assistants focused on drafting emails or answering questions, Copilot Cowork is built to deliver outcomes. Users can assign an objective such as preparing a report, managing a project or conducting research and the platform automatically maps out the workflow, executes tasks and presents the completed output.
Operating across applications including Outlook, Teams, Excel and SharePoint, the AI tool continuously draws on organisational data to coordinate activities, analyse information and automate processes with minimal manual intervention.
Microsoft said the platform can handle a range of workplace functions, including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, analysing datasets, drafting communications and compiling research reports. It can also continue working in the background, even when users are offline, making it suitable for long-running enterprise processes.
The company is positioning Copilot Cowork as an “AI teammate” rather than an AI assistant, reflecting a broader shift in how businesses are expected to use artificial intelligence. Instead of simply helping employees complete tasks, the system is designed to manage workflows end-to-end while keeping humans involved through approval checkpoints.
The launch also introduces additional enterprise features, including support for multiple AI models, cost-management controls and plugin integrations with third-party applications, enabling organisations to customise deployments based on operational needs and budgets.
Copilot Cowork arrives as competition in enterprise AI accelerates, with technology giants racing to develop tools that can automate entire business functions rather than generate content alone.
