NEW DELHI: Artificial intelligence is making the grade, and now schools are being handed a lesson plan to match. The HUMAIN AI Literacy Mission (HAILM) was launched nationally on Tuesday, unveiling a structured programme designed to help schools introduce AI education from Grades 3 to 12 through a mix of classroom learning, teacher training and digital resources.
Launched at Bharat Mandapam, the initiative aims to make AI literacy accessible across India by combining an age-appropriate curriculum with live sessions, video lessons, interactive activities, a learning management system, classroom-ready resources and professional development for teachers. Foundational AI learning will be available free of cost, with the mission hoping to widen access across schools irrespective of geography.
The launch comes as artificial intelligence increasingly shapes how students search for information, create content and learn. While AI tools have become more common in classrooms and homes, structured education around how the technology works, where it can be useful and where its limitations lie has remained inconsistent.
HAILM seeks to bridge that gap by moving beyond basic awareness to practical and responsible AI use. Its approach extends beyond students, placing equal emphasis on equipping teachers with classroom-ready tools and helping school leaders develop policies for AI adoption.
Explaining the vision behind the initiative, HAILM chief visionary Manit Jain said India’s AI journey must go beyond simply teaching students how to use technology.
“AI has already started influencing how our children learn, work and make decisions. We must ensure they do not grow up merely as users of this technology, but understand its possibilities, limitations and responsibilities,” said HAILM chief visionary Manit Jain.
He added that making foundational AI literacy freely available and supporting schools through a structured learning pathway would help democratise AI education while contributing to the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Focusing on implementation, HAILM chief executive officer Amit Yadav said the programme has been designed around the realities of Indian classrooms rather than as a one-off intervention.
“Our aim is to build a model that schools can adopt with confidence across different contexts, while keeping responsible use central to how students encounter AI,” said HAILM CEO Amit Yadav.
The mission also received backing from Delhi’s education minister Ashish Sood, who said early exposure to AI literacy would help students engage with emerging technologies more responsibly and confidently.
“Our classrooms have embraced the digital shift; the next step is ensuring students and teachers understand the AI systems shaping the world around them, safely and responsibly,” said Government of NCT of Delhi minister of education Ashish Sood.
Following the launch, HAILM will begin onboarding schools, expanding teacher training cohorts and building partnerships with education institutions across the country. Details of state-wise implementation and institutional collaborations are expected to be announced as the rollout gathers pace.
As AI becomes increasingly embedded across education, business and everyday life, HAILM is positioning itself as more than another curriculum initiative. By bringing students, teachers and school leaders onto the same learning pathway, the mission hopes to ensure that India’s next generation does not simply keep up with AI, but learns to question, understand and use it responsibly.
