Google Vids gets AI video generation and personal avatars

Gemini Omni and AI avatars let users create and edit videos with prompts

MUMBAI: Lights, camera, conversation. Google is making video creation less about cameras and more about commands, rolling out new artificial intelligence features that let users generate, edit and even star in videos without stepping in front of the lens.

The tech giant has unveiled Gemini Omni and personal AI avatars for Google Vids, expanding the platform’s generative AI capabilities as competition intensifies among technology companies racing to simplify content creation.

The headline addition is Gemini Omni, which enables users to create videos by combining natural language prompts with reference images. Instead of manually stitching together clips, users can describe what they want and let the AI generate the video.

The tool also introduces conversational editing, allowing users to refine existing videos through text prompts rather than restarting projects from scratch. According to Google, Gemini Omni can perform tasks such as changing backgrounds, improving lighting and adding visual effects, even to videos captured on a smartphone.

Google has also introduced personal avatars, allowing users to create a digital version of themselves using a single selfie and a short voice recording. Once the avatar has been generated, users simply type a script, which the AI-powered avatar delivers on screen without the need for another video shoot.

To address concerns around identity and misuse, Google said avatars are tied to the account holder’s Google Account and can only represent that individual’s own likeness. The feature is currently available only to users aged 18 and above in supported regions.

The latest AI capabilities are rolling out to Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra and Google Workspace business customers using Google Vids.

As AI-generated content becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from human-created media, Google is also introducing safeguards. Every video clip created using the new tools will carry an invisible SynthID watermark, enabling the content to be identified as AI-generated and supporting greater transparency.

The launch marks Google’s latest push to turn AI into a practical productivity tool rather than just a creative novelty. By allowing users to create polished videos through simple prompts, edit footage conversationally and generate presenter-style avatars without a camera setup, the company is betting that the next generation of workplace video production will rely less on editing software and more on artificial intelligence.
