Google unveils Gemini Spark, an AI agent that works on tasks around the clock

New autonomous assistant can manage emails, schedules and research while keeping users in control

New Delhi: It looks like the era of ticking off endless to-do lists may soon get a helping hand. Google has introduced Gemini Spark, a new autonomous AI agent designed to work continuously in the background, helping users manage tasks, organise information and automate routine workflows across their digital lives.

Unlike a conventional chatbot that waits for prompts, Gemini Spark is positioned as a 24/7 personal AI agent capable of independently carrying out multi-step tasks, even when a user’s phone or computer is switched off. Google said the system remains under the user’s control, with major actions requiring approval before they are executed.

The platform is built around five core capabilities that allow it to handle personal and professional workflows across Google’s ecosystem.

Under its Tasks feature, users can assign long-running objectives, such as tracking internship opportunities, monitoring new listings or following specific online developments over time.

The Schedules capability allows Gemini Spark to perform recurring activities automatically. For example, users can ask it to review emails every Monday morning, prepare a weekly summary, generate a prioritised to-do list and even reserve calendar slots for focused work.

With Skills, the AI can learn from a user’s previous work to create reusable capabilities. Google demonstrated this by showing how Spark can analyse the last 50 emails written by a user, generate a personalised writing style guide and automatically apply it whenever new emails are drafted through a custom skill called “ghostwriter”.

The Workspace functionality extends these capabilities to documents and files stored across Google Drive. Users can instruct Spark to scan folders, organise important files into spreadsheets, classify content and generate notes to improve document management.

Meanwhile, the Organisation feature introduces workflow automation across connected services. One example showed the AI extracting client information from incoming emails, updating a tracking spreadsheet and automatically creating a dedicated folder in Google Drive for each new customer.

Beyond productivity, Google highlighted several practical consumer applications. Gemini Spark can monitor inboxes for industry newsletters and generate concise weekly summaries, helping users stay updated without reading every email individually.

The company also showcased travel planning capabilities, where the AI can consolidate information from lengthy email chains, organise receipts into spreadsheets and send itinerary updates to group members.

For homeowners, Spark is designed to analyse invoices and maintenance records, anticipate recurring household requirements, create reminders in Google Calendar, and maintain shopping lists in Google Keep.

Another use case focuses on financial organisation, with the AI searching through inboxes to locate invoices, receipts and pending payments before organising them into a structured view for easier tracking.

Google also said Gemini Spark can conduct live web research across multiple websites, compare products and services, and assist users in completing purchases or bookings, reducing the need for manual browsing.

By combining autonomous task execution with integrations across Google Workspace and other Google services, the company is positioning Gemini Spark as a digital assistant that goes beyond answering questions to proactively managing day-to-day work. The launch reflects the growing shift towards AI agents that can independently complete complex workflows while keeping users in charge of final decisions.
