NEW DELHI: The VYOMA Innovation Challenge has recognised four innovations for developing practical, open-source AI solutions tailored to India’s diverse needs.
The finale, hosted at IIIT-Delhi by the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) under Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with Current AI and Kalpa Impact, brought together researchers, students and startups working on AI hardware and software.
Ten finalist teams showcased working prototypes addressing areas including healthcare, agriculture, welfare access, legal services and accessibility. The challenge was built around Suno Sutra, an open-source, multilingual handheld AI reference design co-developed by BHASHINI and Current AI.
The four winning teams were Team Asha Sahayak, Team Shravan, Team Sangrah – Apna Saathi, and Team Sahyak Mitra – A.V.E.R.A. (Autonomous Voice-enabled Edge Rural Advisor). Each received prize money in recognition of their innovations and potential for public-interest deployment.
The finale also featured prototype demonstrations and jury interactions, with discussions covering hardware optimisation, model quantisation, accuracy and the transition of promising ideas towards real-world deployment.
MeitY scientist ‘G’ Kavita Bhatia said the initiative aims to move AI closer to citizens through solutions that can operate locally, work offline, reduce bandwidth dependence and protect privacy.
MeitY scientist ‘E’ Tarun Pandey said VYOMA provides a platform for young innovators, researchers and technology practitioners to develop practical applications of emerging technologies for public good.
Digital India BHASHINI Division CEO Amitabh Nag said the challenge was driven by the need for open, offline hardware that can make AI more inclusive in connectivity-constrained environments, adding that the next phase would focus on user feedback, collaboration and faster learning.
The challenge also brought together stakeholders from the open-source AI hardware, multilingual AI and Edge AI ecosystem. Participants explored how open hardware and embedded AI can be adapted to different linguistic, technological and deployment environments.
Suno Sutra was unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026 as an open-source, multilingual and human-centric AI hardware reference design. VYOMA builds on that effort by putting the design in the hands of emerging innovators and encouraging its adaptation for diverse Indian use cases.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening an open ecosystem for AI software and hardware while supporting locally relevant, multilingual and edge-based applications.
