MUMBAI: In 1993, while most ten year olds were busy trading marbles or sticker books, Arsyan Ismail was busy on the early internet. Armed with his mother’s credit card and a childhood whim, the young Malaysian boy spent $100 (roughly ₹300 at the time) on a two letter web address: AI.com.
The reason for the purchase was not a prophetic vision of a world run by algorithms. It was much simpler. The letters stood for his initials: Arsyan Iismail. His mother, understandably baffled by the meaningless charge on her statement, could never have guessed that her son had just accidentally secured the most valuable digital real estate of the 21st century.
For over thirty years, Ismail held onto the domain as he grew into a prominent figure in the Malaysian tech scene. A true internet pioneer, he worked on early social networks like Friendster and Kawanster before founding his own company, 1337 Tech, in 2013.
As the tech world pivoted toward Artificial Intelligence, the value of those two letters began to sizzle. By the time 2025 rolled around, AI.com had become the ultimate prize for tech giants. After listing the domain for $100 million, Ismail eventually shook hands (digitally) with Kris Marszalek, the CEO of Crypto.com, for a final price of $70 million (₹634 crore).
The deal, which was settled entirely in cryptocurrency, was kept under wraps until February 2026. The domain made its grand re-entry to the world during a Super Bowl LX commercial, where it was revealed as the home for a new agentic AI platform.
The site now allows users to create personal AI handles, but the real story remains the man who sat on the golden ticket for three decades. Reflecting on the deal, Ismail offered a single piece of grounded advice for anyone finding themselves at a table with a titan, “Don’t over-negotiate with a billionaire.”
With a return on investment that would make Wall Street weep, Ismail remains a collector of rare digital assets, including the world’s shortest email address. It seems for this technopreneur, brevity really is the soul of wit, and wealth.
