Gen Z hosts rise 40 per cent on Airbnb in India, earnings jump 60 per cent

Younger Indians are turning local hospitality into a growing entrepreneurial opportunity

MUMBAI: India’s Gen Z is increasingly swapping the guest room for the host seat, with nearly two in five new Airbnb hosts in the country aged between 18 and 29 years in the first half of 2026.

According to an Airbnb report, host earnings among Gen Z increased by more than 60 per cent year on year during the first six months of 2026. The overall number of Gen Z hosts also rose by nearly 40 per cent year on year during the period, pointing to growing participation by younger Indians in the country’s accommodation and hospitality economy.

Airbnb, country head, India and Southeast Asia, Amanpreet Singh Bajaj, said, “India’s Gen Z is redefining what it means to participate in travel, not just as travellers, but increasingly as hosts and entrepreneurs.”

He added, “We’re seeing young Indians open their doors to travellers, share their local knowledge and create new opportunities for themselves through hosting on Airbnb. It’s exciting to see this generation bringing its creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and distinctly local perspective to Airbnb’s host community.”

The growth is not limited to India’s largest cities. Bangalore, Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai and Noida recorded notable increases in Gen Z hosts, while Indore emerged as the fastest-growing urban market, with host numbers climbing by more than 120 per cent year on year.

Other emerging markets included Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lucknow, Mathura and Dehradun, suggesting that younger hosts are expanding the homestay economy beyond the country’s traditional travel hubs.

The trend is also spreading into less densely populated areas. Gen Z host numbers in rural locations increased by 60 per cent year on year, while low-density urban locations recorded growth of nearly 70 per cent.

The expansion comes alongside signs that service standards are holding up as more young hosts join the platform. Nearly one in seven Gen Z hosts in India has achieved Superhost status, according to the report.

The numbers underline a broader shift in how younger Indians are engaging with travel. Beyond booking stays and experiences, a growing cohort is using accommodation hosting as a way to earn, engage with travellers and showcase local culture.

With Gen Z hosts gaining ground in both major cities and emerging destinations, India’s homestay market appears to be finding a new generation of hosts ready to turn spare spaces and local knowledge into business opportunities.
