MUMBAI: For Indian AI users, the exchange rate has finally left the chat. Anthropic has introduced India-specific pricing for its Claude AI subscription plans, allowing customers to pay in Indian rupees instead of US dollars as the company deepens its push into one of its fastest-growing markets.
The move comes as India has emerged as Claude’s second-largest market globally, accounting for 5.8 per cent of worldwide usage, behind only the United States, according to data shared by Anthropic.
The revised pricing has begun rolling out across Claude’s website and mobile applications for some users. Subscriptions are now billed in rupees and include Goods and Services Tax (GST), eliminating the foreign exchange conversion charges Indian customers previously incurred when paying in US dollars.
At present, users can subscribe using debit and credit cards or through the Apple App Store and Google Play billing systems. Unified Payments Interface (UPI), however, is not yet supported.
Under the new pricing structure, Claude Pro is available at Rs 2,000 per month with annual billing or Rs 2,399 on a monthly plan.
Anthropic has also localised pricing for its premium offerings. Claude Max 5x starts at Rs 11,999 per month, while Claude Max 20x is priced at Rs 23,999 per month.
For businesses, the Claude Team Standard plan costs Rs 2,399 per user per month on annual billing or Rs 2,999 on a monthly commitment. The Team Premium plan begins at Rs 11,999 per user each month under an annual contract.
Claude Pro subscribers gain access to Anthropic’s latest AI models, higher usage limits, research tools, expanded project management features, memory, web search, voice mode, file uploads and integrations with Microsoft 365. The higher-tier Max plans offer significantly larger usage limits, priority access during peak demand and early access to new models and features.
The pricing update follows Anthropic’s broader expansion in India over the past year. The company has established a Bengaluru office, appointed former Microsoft India Managing Director Irina Ghose to lead its India operations and signed enterprise partnerships with Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to expand Claude’s adoption among businesses.
The move also intensifies competition in India’s rapidly evolving AI subscription market, where OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and Google Gemini already offer locally priced plans. Unlike OpenAI, however, Anthropic has yet to introduce UPI payments, the country’s most widely used digital payment method.
As global AI companies race to capture India’s vast developer community and expanding enterprise market, local pricing is becoming more than a billing convenience. It is increasingly a competitive necessity. The bigger challenge now lies in converting millions of curious users into paying subscribers in one of the world’s most price-sensitive digital markets.
