OpenAI says India is among fastest-growing markets for Codex

Weekly active users surged 27 times in 2026 as adoption expands beyond coding

MUMBAI: India isn’t just writing code anymore, it’s prompting a productivity revolution. OpenAI has revealed that India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for Codex, its AI-powered coding and productivity platform, with weekly active users soaring 27 times since the beginning of 2026. The surge underscores India’s rapidly expanding appetite for artificial intelligence tools, not only among software developers but across a much broader spectrum of professionals. According to OpenAI, daily interactions on Codex climbed more than 20-fold by late April, placing India among the platform’s top five markets globally for adoption and among the top ten for overall engagement.

What’s particularly notable is how the platform’s role is evolving. While Codex initially gained traction as a coding assistant, more than a quarter of requests from Indian users now relate to non-coding tasks. These include information synthesis, document drafting, research automation, workflow management and communication support, reflecting a shift from code generation to workplace productivity.

The latest figures build on trends OpenAI highlighted earlier this year. In February, the company reported that coding-related usage in India was roughly three times the global average, while coding-focused prompts were nearly three times the global median. The new data suggests that India’s AI adoption story is now broadening beyond the developer community.

From start-up founders and researchers to students, operators and business teams, Codex is increasingly being used to accelerate execution and turn ideas into outcomes faster. The platform’s growing appeal mirrors a wider trend in which AI tools are becoming everyday work companions rather than specialist technologies.

Thomas Jeng, Head of Startups for APAC at OpenAI, said India’s adoption pattern stands out because it extends well beyond software engineers. He noted that founders, operators, researchers and business teams are increasingly using Codex to move from concept to execution at greater speed.

The momentum is also being fuelled by enterprise adoption. OpenAI said organisations including TCS, Infosys and Razorpay are exploring or deploying Codex across software engineering and enterprise workflow operations, helping drive wider usage across professional environments.

For India, the numbers signal more than just enthusiasm for a new technology. They reflect the emergence of a market where AI is becoming deeply embedded in how work gets done. If the first wave of AI adoption was about generating code, the next appears to be about generating productivity.

And judging by the pace of growth, India’s builders, businesses and professionals are already pressing enter.
