British IPL broadcast engineer found dead in Mumbai hotel

Trident Hotel staff discover Ian Williams Langford unresponsive in his room.

MUMBAI: When the final whistle blows off the pitch, sometimes the silence that follows carries the heaviest weight. A British national working as a broadcast engineer for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) was found dead in his hotel room in south Mumbai. The deceased has been identified as Ian Williams Langford. He had been staying at the Trident Hotel since 24 March in connection with IPL match coverage. According to police, Langford returned to his room on 29 March after completing his duties for the day’s match.

On 30 March, when repeated calls from hotel reception went unanswered, staff members checked on him. Receiving no response, they entered the room using a master key and found Langford lying on the floor. The hotel’s in-house doctor was called immediately and declared him dead.

Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) at Marine Drive Police Station. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death.

In the high-octane world of the IPL, where every moment on screen is meticulously engineered, this quiet exit behind the scenes has left a sombre note amid the season’s spotlight.
